What is Shiruko (Azuki Soup)?

Shiruko (Azuki Soup) is a warm and sweet food (drink) commonly consumed in Japan during the winter.
It's a dish where sweetened, pureed adzuki beans are cooked until thick and syrupy, then served with mochi or shiratama dango. Although it looks like a soup, it's a heartwarming dish due to the rich, liquid azuki beans.
Shiruko is sometimes called Zenzai. In this case, when smooth, no-grain koshian (paste-like red bean) is used, it's referred to as 'oshiruko', while when chunky tsubuan (intentionally leaving bean shapes and textures) is used, it's known as 'zenzai'.

By the way, the Shiruko (Azuki Soup) page we're introducing this time also features Zenzai, so check it out. Personally, I like the tsubuan version of Shiruko (Azuki Soup) because I enjoy the texture of the beans.

I prefer the koshian version because the soup is easier to drink! Both offer different delicious tastes of Shiruko, so please try whichever you're curious about!
