Limited region ramen means its menu was developed in one of regions in Japan, and the ramen is consumed mostly by the people there, right? For example, like Hokkaido’s miso-flavored ramen, Dosanko Ramen,
And like Okinawa soba that uses Okinawa meat and vegetables!
Well, I guess compared to these two, today’s Sanmamen feels less major. But it’s really yummy! It’s perfect specifically for a cooolllld winter, it’s an awesome ramen!
So what is Sanmamen?
Sanmamen is a noodle dish that refers to a salt ramen that uses thin noodles, or soy-sauce ramen that’s topped with rich sauce with beansprouts cooked just enough to remain crunchy.
In kanji, Sanmamen is written “生馬麺,” “生(San)” means “fresh and crunchy,” and “馬(ma)” means “to put on top.” It’s been said that the origin of the name comes from quickly stir-frying fresh vegetables and meat and, while still crunchy, pour over noodle.
The name is derived from Cantonese, and the flavoring is based on cooking from the Catonese-speaking regions. The menu was developed around 1930’s at a Chinese food restaurant in Yokohama China Town, 聘珍樓(Heichinrou).
To put simply, it’s a Vegetable gravy soup ramen that originated in Yokohama, right?
Yes! We crave ramen but sometimes we feel guilty...... But, Sanmamen is ramen but has a lot of vegetables! So, it’s a ramen that you can eat without feeling guilt!
I don’t really understand that logic, but because Sanmamen is typically a ramen with a lot of vegetables, it’s a good ramen choice when we want to eat with a lot of healthy nutrients.
Yes! What was surprising is that Sanmamen is not well-known all over Japan, but it’s a limited-region ramen that was born in the Kanto-Region! It’s too delicious for that! I wonder how much of its flavor is replicated in the cup noodle we are having today? This is exciting~!
The flavor of Yamadai Instant Yokohama Sanma Men Noodle!
- The soup will make you feel “This is Sanmamen!!” A classic flavor!
- The gravy soup is soy-sauce flavor with a little bit of oyster sauce, and it’s very rich in flavor and delicious! It’s filled with the yumminess and flavor that makes you want another sip! (*But because the gravy is thick, it can be really hot! Be careful not to burn yourself!)
- Noodle is thin noodle, a classic for Sanmamen!
- Because the noodle is thin, it’s easy to eat with the soup’s veggies too. If it’s any thicker, it would be hard to eat with the vegetable, so it’s really made for maximum “deliciousness” and is a “classic recipe”!
- Topping includes Sanmamen’s key components, vegetables!
- Comes with classic toppings for Sanmamen. “beansprouts” of course, but also “carrots,” and even “wood-ear mushrooms”! It gives different texture compared to the soft noodles, so the deliciousness continues bite after bite!
- Overall, it recreates Sanmamen’s symbolic features, the soup, noodle, and vegetable very well so it’s a flavor with very high satisfaction!

It’s so thick so the soup is so hot~. But that’s what makes it so warming.
This Sanmamen doesn’t have my favorite small chunks of pork...... But even without the pork, it’s still high completion level, so I’m really very highly satisfied. Simply put, yummy!!
