Good with Miso Soup Too! The BEST Part about Fu!

Fugashi!? You never share such a rare snack, huh?
I know, right? I’ve known this but I usually don’t eat it much so...... I got it the other day!

What Is Fugashi?

Fugashi

Fugashi is made of fried wheat (made of wheat and water) and flavored with sugar or brown sugar. Outside surface is very crispy with sugar, and the inside has a sweet and fluffy texture. You can enjoy the original flavor of Fu.

Fugashi is rare? What is “Fu” which is familiar to Japanese people?

I think Japanese people usually associate ‘Fu’ with the one in miso soup, not as a snack coated with sugar.
Right. To me, I always associate it with one of the ingredients in Miso soup. I love the texture where the flavor spreads out once we eat the absorbed ‘Fu’ in soup......!

Yep. ‘Fu’ itself has no flavor but it adds the flavor when it’s absorbed with other ingredients. It’s like a sponge that absorbs in soup, adding the flavors to it. The texture is soft and fluffy and the flavor spreads out throughout a mouth.

Fugashi used to be called “the king of Dagashiya=a penny candy store”!

Have you ever heard of the store, dagashiya (=a penny candy store)?
In this store, very cheap snacks and sweets for kids are available, starting from 5 yen (≒5 pennies) !
To me, it was like heaven in my childhood~! With 100 yen (≒a dollar), we were able to buy a lot of snacks.
But now, regular snacks have been sold in cheap prices everywhere, so we hardly see these stores in Japan......
So...... Fugashi was one of the most popular snacks in the store, huh?
Yep. Cheap, yummy and has a lot in each package! That’s the reason why they were popular among kids, I guess. For kids who loved sweets, for kids who loved to eat a lot...... They were all satisfied with Fugashi, huh?

What Does Fugashi Taste Like?

  • It’s coated by brown sugar and the inside has a fluffy and unique texture!
  • Once you have a bite, the brown sugar melts and the sweetness spreads out in the mouth!
  • The fluffy part inside is not too sweet so it’s perfectly matched with the thick flavor outside!
  • It’s a fluffy and sweet snack! Those who don’t have strong teeth can even enjoy it!
Try both ‘Fu’ as a snack (Fugashi) and as an ingredient in miso soup!
