saori
Oo!!A Kyoto fair today!
boss/question
Do you like Kyoto?
saori/smile
I do! I’ve only gone a few times, but I remember it was a fun vacation that felt exotic and unordinary!!
boss/smile
Yes! It has unique characteristics and perfect for traveling! But to start with, what is Kyoto like? What kind of images do Japanese people associate it with? Let’s do a brief introduction of its recommended food and such!

What is the ‘Kyoto’ image that Japanese people hold?

Kyoto is located here! Climate is mild and seasons change gracefully in this area!
saori
Boss, what kind of image do you have of Kyoto?
boss/smile
I think of it as Japan’s leading tourist spot of course. In front of the train station has buildings and kind of urban area vibe, but if you walk a little from there or hop on a bus, you’ll find temples and shrines...... It’s an area with an one-and-only atmosphere. It has a lot of shrines and temples with cherry blossom trees, so I think it’s a perfect place to go during this warm spring season!

Then what’s the Japanese people’s image of “Food from Kyoto”?

saori/question
I haven’t traveled much to Kyoto, but what are some of their famous foods?
boss
Well~ There’s quite a few thoughts but I think there’s a lot of seriously legit Japanese sweets and cuisine. For sweets, the ones that use matcha or red beans are pretty popular, and for food, ‘kyo-kaiseki’ is pretty popular too.
saori/high
True! Kyoto has the image of traditional Japan! ......But why is there a lot of traditional, matcha and red-bean foods?
boss/smile
I think it’s because Kyoto is one of Japan’s leading area for tea ceremony. The familiar matcha flavor is a given, and the food that goes well with that continued to develop. Kyo-kaiseki that we mentioned earlier is a cuisine for eating between tea ceremonies too. (This is a theory)
boss
Especially uji-matcha made from Kyoto Uji is famous as the highest quality matcha with a richness and deep-sweetness to follow bitterness.
saori/smile
Uji matcha!! I’ve heard of it!! It’s also famous as sweets flavor too right!

And so! Popular Kyoto foods are matcha & traditional Japanese! The recommended Kyoto foods are these!!

boss/smile
And so, speaking of Kyoto, matcha foods are yummy and recommended! That famous sweets also have rich Kyoto-only limited edition flavors too!

saori/question
wait? Is this stick shaped snack Yatsuhashi too? The Yatsuhashi I know is a triangular sweet, but......
boss
People mix this up a lot, but if you say Yatsuhashi in Kyoto, this stick-shaped type is the standard type.
saori/sad
What!!!??Then the triangular Yatsuhashi I know is not Yatsuhashi!!!!??
boss
The triangular Yatsuhashi that Saori is thinking about is called Nama Yatsuhashi, and it’s the Yatsuhashi dough before baking. Nama Yatsuhashi is delicious raw without baking too, and its common arrangement is with red-bean paste inside.
saori
So at Kyoto, the baked stick-type Yatsuhashi is the standard one...... I had no idea.
boss/smile
Yes correct. They are both drastically different in taste, so I want everyone to try this authentic stick-shaped Yatsuhashi first. It’s a crispy snack that goes very well with matcha!
saori/high
This was a parade of matcha-flavored foods today! Matcha fan article readers, yes you! How about taking a trip to Kyoto sometime~?
